Reminder ... Thanksgiving week, we're open, and students have school on Monday, November 22, and Tuesday, November 23 - there will be no school on Wednesday, November 24, Thursday, November 25, and Friday, November 26.
Pennoyer's teachers create engaged lessons every day! Some use technology (like the interactive white boards shown in the photo), others use other instructional "best practices". It's a wonderful learning environment and we're happy to celebrate student learning every day - and at tomorrow's parent teacher conferences.
While Pennoyer school is closed on November 11 in honor of Veteran's Day, our students will participate in an all-school assembly on November 10th. Our aim is to use holidays and days off in commemoration of great heroes or events as learning opportunities for our students.
About Veterans Day
Great Britain, France, and other countries celebrate November 11th as Armistice Day to commemorate the ending of World War I on November 11, 1918. Fighting ceased at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month. Canada celebrates Remembrance Day on this same date.
The history of the Veterans Day in the United States is as follows:
1919 - President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11th as Armistice Day to remind Americans of the tragedies of war.
1938 - The day becomes a federal holiday.
1954 - Congress changes the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor all United States Veterans.
Today, in the United States, Veterans Day commemorates the courage and patriotism of all the men and women who have served in the United States military.
